Maximizing Efficiency with Clarke Hose Clips: Tips for Proper Installation and Maintenance

One thing’s for sure. As tiny as hose clips may seem, they are a super handy tool to have. Especially if you are a plumber, or work extensively with pipes in general. And even more so when you’ve got Clarke’s hose clips in your toolbox. They are truly handy, hardy, and versatile. That said, on paper, it might seem easy to install hose clips (or clamps as they say) on pipes but it requires a certain level of precision and tact. Let us tell you what we mean.

How to properly install Clarke Hose Clips: steps, tips and tricks

Installation of the Clarke hose clip is a piece of cake. Here are the steps to installing hose clamps:

Step 1: Loosen your hose clip. You can do this by turning the screw on it in an anticlockwise direction.

Step 2: Now place it on the hose you intend to use, sliding it on like a ring. Make sure the screw portion of the clip is visible and accessible to you. At this stage, the clip will be loose.

Step 3: Get the hose clip to the desired spot. It should be sitting snugly on the portion of the hose you intend to clip.

Step 4: Now tighten the hose clip by screwing it in a clockwise direction. Once you’re done, check if it’s been installed tightly. If it doesn’t budge from its place, your job is done.

Need some extra tips? You’ll love these hacks because they will show you how to install your Clarke hose clips just right.

  • Make sure you use the right hose clip size based on the size of your pipe. Clarke’s hose clips come in a variety of sizes and the wrong size can lead to a clamp being either too tight or too loose - both of which are far from ideal.
  • Plus, the tail of your hose clip should not be too long. This relates to the size issue again but it is a good reference point to know what the ideal size for your project is. If the tail end is too long or non-existent, you do not have the right size on you.
  • You must always use a screwdriver or a hex driver to install a hose clip onto a pipe.
  • Also, make sure the size of the hex driver or the screwdriver you use matches the size of the bolt or the screw in your Clarke hose clip. That should make your job effortless.
  • You should leave a minimum gap of ¼” between the edge of the hose and the clip for easier access to both the hose and the clip.
  • Never overtighten your hose clip. That can put too much pressure on the clip and the pipe, which could eventually lead to damage.
  • We suggest using a torque wrench for screwing your hose clips nice and snug. You can also use an electric torque screwdriver if you have one. A socket drive is another alternative.
  • Incorrect tightening of the hose clip can cause damage to the hose or the clip so make sure your screwdriver is properly calibrated to prevent such accidents.
  • If you plan to put the hose clip on a polyethylene pipe, heat the pipe before you install it. That’ll help make the pipe more pliable.

How to ensure proper maintenance of your installed Clarke Hose Clips

Believe it or not, even a small item like Clarke’s Hose Clips requires a certain amount of maintenance. After all, that’s the only way to ensure everything runs smoothly. Here are a couple of hose clip maintenance tips that’ll help you out:

  • Check your hose clips every few months. Hose clips can become loose over time. Thermal expansion or vibrations are a major cause of this. Tighten any loose hose clips you find with the appropriate wrench or screwdriver.
  • Replace any damaged hose clips you find. If upon regular inspection you find that the hose itself is damaged, change the hose and install a new hose clip that is of the correct size for your chosen pipe.
  • Rusty hose clips should be replaced immediately as they are likely to have already lost their strength to keep your pipes in place.
  • You can do a magnet test with your old hose clips to see if they need replacement. If the magnet sticks to your clip, it’s time to get a new clip.
  • If you’ve installed two hose clips on one pipe and find one of them needs replacement, replace the other one at the same time too. It’ll save you the hassle of conducting the replacement once the clip or hose has been damaged. Preventive repairs are better than fixing a problem.
